Can You Reduce Your Need for AC Repair By Covering Your Air Conditioner?

As a homeowner, it’s important to take good care of your air conditioner to reduce the need for AC repair as much as possible. One strategy many people use to achieve this goal is covering up their air conditioners in the winter, but does this method actually help? Here’s what you should know.

There are some situations when you shouldn’t cover your air conditioner during the winter. If you live in a warm climate where you’ll be using your AC all year long, you won’t want to cover it up.

If you have a heat pump instead of an AC unit, you’ll also want to leave that uncovered, as it needs to run through the winter.

However, if you live in a cold climate and have a standard air conditioner, it can often help to cover it for protection. During the colder months, items like leaves and icicles can fall onto an air conditioner and cause damage, and placing a tarp on it can help reduce these risks. However, it’s important that you only cover the top of your air conditioner and not the whole thing. Otherwise, you may have to deal with trapped moisture or animals getting inside the unit. Also, be sure to remove the tarp in the spring.
